High strength SPM hawser for subsea and deepsea conditions

A Dyneema® hawser is a popular choice for a Single Point Mooring (SPM) system because it combines very high strength with low weight and excellent durability in harsh marine conditions in both saltwater and freshwater.

Compared to traditional materials like wire rope, nylon or polyester ropes, Dyneema® fibres offer:

  • Lower snap-back energy than steel wire (less recoil if failure occurs)

  • No corrosion (unlike steel)

  • More predictable performance under load

For high-load, dynamically loaded offshore tanker moorings, these properties make Dyneema® one of the most effective and widely used materials.

Functions

  • Connecting tankers to a floating buoy.

  • Transfer environmental loads from the vessel to the buoy

  • Absorb dynamic energy from waves and swell

  • Maintain safe vessel positioning during cargo transfer

Features

  • Very good fatigue resistance
  • High abrasion resistance
  • Neutrally buoyant and easy to recover
  • Long service life under dynamic marine conditions
  • Reduced maintenance and replacement frequency

Hawser construction

The construction of an SPM (Single Point Mooring) hawser is purpose-designed to handle very high dynamic loads, fatigue, and harsh offshore conditions while maintaining safety and controlled elongation.

SPM hawsers are engineered as multi-layer, heavy-duty rope systems.

Core rope (load-bearing structure)

The core is the primary strength member and is made of Dyneema® or HMPE fibres. The rope construction is 12 strand braided multiple rope core which is torque-balanced construction.

HMPE/Dyneema-based constructions are increasingly used for:

  • Reduced weight

  • Higher strength

  • Easier handling

Core Rope

External protective cover

Fibre hawsers are equipped with multiple layers of flexible laminated and PU-coated jackets eliminating any chance of particle ingress into the load-bearing core.

The design of hawsers has been chosen in order to achieve the best possible long-term performance under dynamic subsea load conditions.

SPM hawsers often include

  • Heavy-duty chafe-resistant outer jackets – several layers

  • Replaceable chafe sleeves in way of fairleads

  • Polyurethane or polyester coating in high-wear zones

The design of the hawser and the construction of the cover is always done in close cooperation with the customer. Dynamica SPM hawsers are offered with several layers of jackets and additional heavy duty Dyneema® cover on the anchor points.

Mud and sand filter

Dynamica Hawsers can be manufactured with sand- and mud filter which creates a barrier between the load bearing core and the multiple layers of cover.

The filter is an active barrier to particles and allows free flooding of the tether while protecting the load bearing core.

Eye and end terminations

SPM hawsers are typically supplied with:

  • Large soft spliced and reinforced eyes

  • Heavy-duty thimbles

The eye area is one of the most critical structural zones.

What is a Single Point Mooring (SPM) System?

A Single Point Mooring System is a floating buoy that serves as a mooring point for offshore vessels, particularly tankers. These buoys are connected to the seabed using anchor chains or catenary anchor leg mooring systems. The SPM buoy allows for the transfer of liquid or gas cargo from the vessel to the shore or vice versa via flexible hoses and a product transfer system. A central component of this setup is the SPM hawser, which connects the vessel to the buoy and ensures controlled load transfer.

The SPM system is a critical component in offshore tanker operations as it enables vessels to load or unload cargo in deep waters without having to dock at a terminal. The performance of the system depends heavily on the quality, material selection, and resistance properties of its mooring components, particularly the Single Point Mooring hawsers.

The critical role of SPM Mooring hawsers

In offshore operations, Single Point Mooring (SPM) hawsers play an essential role in maintaining the stability and security of vessels during product transfer in challenging marine environments. These hawsers are responsible for withstanding the enormous forces generated by waves, wind, and currents, particularly in open-sea conditions where vessels are constantly exposed to environmental stresses.

The design and strength of a Single Point Mooring hawser are critical in preventing mooring failures, which can lead to severe operational disruptions or even catastrophic events such as tanker collisions or oil spills and environmental disasters. By absorbing and distributing the dynamic loads placed on the mooring system, Single Point Mooring hawsers ensure that the vessel remains securely moored to the SPM buoy, even in extreme conditions like storms or monsoons.

In addition to handling constant movement and shifting mooring loads, SPM hawsers provide a crucial buffer that helps mitigate the risk of sudden breakage or overloading. Their capacity to flex and stretch under pressure allows them to manage the strain placed on mooring lines and anchor systems, offering an added layer of protection to the overall mooring arrangement. Modern fibre ropes are particularly well suited for this purpose due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent fatigue resistance.

Ultimately, the reliability of an SPM system depends heavily on the quality and performance of its hawser arrangement. These components are often the first line of defence against the intense mechanical stresses involved in offshore mooring operations, making them indispensable in ensuring the safety and efficiency of offshore tanker operations. Regular inspection and planned maintenance are therefore essential to preserve resistance, functionality, and operational reliability throughout the lifespan of the system.

Why choosing the right SPM hawser matters

Investing in high-quality SPM hawsers is crucial for ensuring the long-term safety and efficiency of offshore mooring operations. The right hawser not only provides the strength and flexibility needed to handle the extreme forces encountered in open seas but also minimizes the risk of costly failures, such as breakages or equipment damage, that could disrupt production and jeopardize the environment.

Durable materials, like Dyneema®, offer significant advantages, as emergency back-up and replacements in SPM mooring systems. These hawsers are designed with an unmatched durability and can withstand harsh marine conditions, including heavy loads, constant movement, and severe weather. Their exceptional resistance to abrasion and fatigue as well as UV-resistance helps reduce wear and tear, extending the service life of the mooring system and lowering costs. Combined with competitive pricing and reliable supply, such solutions provide clear operational and economic benefits.

By choosing high-performance Single Point Mooring Systems, operators can enhance the reliability of their mooring systems, ensuring the safety of vessels, crews, and surrounding ecosystems. The investment in quality hawsers not only protects offshore operations from unexpected disruptions but also contributes to long-term operational success.
